It’s here Reader, As a leader, you’re often called to manage stress on multiple fronts, especially if you hold one or more historically marginalized identities. I wanted to share some resources and practices to support you through the unique pressures that often accompany elections, whether federal or local. Here are a few grounding practices to help manage the moments ahead: 1.Moderate Your News Intake: In a recent session, I reminded clients that they have the power to choose how and when they consume election media. 2.Reconnect with Your Body and Senses: Remember, each day is an opportunity to honor yourself as a living, breathing being. Try taking five-minute breaks each hour to move, breathe, and reconnect. Step outside if you can, feel the air on your skin, and notice what sensations arise. Shirzad Chamine, author of Positive Intelligence, calls these “PQ Reps” – simple moments that build positive mental habits, helping to interrupt automatic thoughts that can create stress and fatigue. This somatic grounding is a gentle way to quiet the noise around you and bring your focus inward. 3. Reach Out to Your Community: Being with trusted friends or colleagues can be a comforting way to process your thoughts. Whether through a Slack channel, a group text, or an evening call, or actually physically getting together, creating or joining a safe space for shared support is a powerful way to connect. 4. Release the Pressure to Have All the Answers: As a leader, you may feel a heavy responsibility to guide others through uncertainty. I invite you to let go of the need to have all the answers. Instead, try to “hold curiosity” as you support others. Ask questions like, “What do you need right now?” This approach fosters interdependence, allowing others to look within themselves for support, while you offer the simple and meaningful gift of listening and presence. In these times, feeling seen and heard often matters more than having the “right” answer. Additional Resources: Free Lyft to the Polls: If you need a ride, Lyft is offering a free service to the polls. Use code NAACPVOTE24 for up to $40 off two rides ($20 per ride). Act quickly – codes are first come, first served! Date: November 6, 2024, 5:30–7:00pm (Pacific)
Sending you ease and resilience in the days ahead. |

Hello Reader, In 2014, I enrolled in Coaching for Transformation, a year-long certification program that transformed not only how I support my clients but also how I approach my own well-being. At the time, my consulting work focused heavily on strategy, but I realized that you can’t train or strategize your way out of someone’s hurt feelings, underdeveloped emotional intelligence, or the sometimes inhumane ways of the modern-day workplace. I learned (was reminded) we need repair-based...
Hi Reader, We set managers up to fail. Or, at the very least, to struggle because we haven’t given them the proper tools to be successful at a very complex job—the job of: managing the professional development of their people, ensuring the emotional well-being of their teams, and manifesting the ideal organizational culture espoused on the company’s marketing materials. When I received my first promotion at my last job, it was because the CEO recognized my individual performance, my strategy,...
